Compressed Zipped Folders option is available in Windows since Windows 95. Compress files take less storage space on computer, and can be transferred to other computers, easily and quickly. Most of us install third party utilities to compress and uncompress files and folders in Windows. However, Windows Compressed Folders lack many features, but if your concern is about just compressing the files and folders to reduce the size, then you can use this small Windows inbuilt utility.
To create a new compressed folder, right-click on an empty area, point to New, and then click Compressed Zipped Folder. Type a name, and press Enter Key. To add files to this newly compressed folder, just drag and drop the files on it. You can instantly compare the size of the original and compressed files, if you are viewing folders and files in list view, or you can right-click on a file or folder, and choose Properties, and then compare the sizes.
Compressing several files to single compressed folders, also makes it easier to share a group of files, or to attach them with your email.
The another way of compressing files and folders is to, right-click on a file or folder that you want to compress, point to Send To, and then click Compressed Zipped Folder. A new compressed folder will be created with the same first name, with Zip extension.
If you want to add more files to the same compressed folder, then you can do this by, just dragging and dropping files on it.
To create a compressed folder from multiple non-continuous files selection, hold down the control key, and then start selecting files. Now, right-click on a selected file, point to Send To, and then click Compressed Zipped Folder. Type a name and press enter key.
Do remember that, some file types like Pictures and Videos are already highly compressed, and if you compress JPEG into a folder, then size of the compressed folder will be same as the original.
To extract or uncompress files from a compressed folder, you can follow these steps. To extract all the files from a compressed folder, right-click on the folder, and then click Extract All. Choose the location where you want to uncompress the folder, and then click Extract.
You can also extract all the files by opening the compressed folder, and then click Extract All from Extract menu. If you want to extract only a few files, then just drag and drop them to a new location within from compressed folder.
